What Makes Gatsby So Great Anyway?

There's going to be a movie version of The Great Gatsby coming out very shortly starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the title character so I took it upon myself to read the book. Books are always better than the films so I thought it would be a good idea, and I'm happy to say that it was. I was supposed to read it for college when I was in first year, but I just read the Wikipedia page the night before my exam. Luckily I forgot all the key details soon afterwards (and I passed the exam!).

It wasn't just the prospect of the movie that made me want to read the book, though. I was also iterested in the author, F. Scott Fitzgerald, after seeing Tom Hiddleston's depiction of him in a really good movie called Midnight in Paris. He was a really cool character so I wanted to read what he has written. Supposedly, Gatsby is an absolute classic, and I can see why. You really can feel the atmosphere of the time in which the book is set, the early 1920's, and Fitzgerald is definitely critiquing the people who were living on the outskirts of  New York during this period. I also really like the narrator, Nick Carraway's, revalation about these people at the end of the book.

I think the characters in this book are very interesting, and the air of mystery that surrounds Jay Gatsby will keep you hooked throughout the book. It is quite a sad story when it comes down to it, and it leaves a bittersweet taste in your mouth as you think about how things could have been different for the characters, but if you read this book, you will definitely be glad that you did.

The Great Gatsby is The Shit.

Tomorrow I will talk about something/someone I hate. Stay tuned.
