Rihanna is definitely a win, but it took a couple of tries. I'm not saying that she wasn't always popular, but there was definitely a change in direction in terms of her music, and her persona that was a huge hit with mainstream audiences. Her first two albums were pretty good, and her debut single, "Pon the Replay", was a real hit. She also had success with the singles "SOS" and "Unfaithful" and it looked like she had a long career ahead of her.
When her third album came out it absolutely exploded. It was a brilliant album, and the lead single "Umbrella" was an absolute sensation all around the world. Yes, the music was good, but we all know that with pop it is not merely about the music. Obviously in the ideal world it would be, but people are fucking shallow, so what are ya gonna do? Image is key within the music industry, and Rihanna went through a complete image overhaul. For fuck's sake, the album was called Good Girl Gone Bad, and that was how she was marketed (and on a side note, you can kinda see the same thing happening right now with Taylor Swift). She had a new hairstyle, and a new super- sexy image, and hey, sex sells.

From good to bad (in a good way). |
Rihanna was now a pop superstar. There are arguably only two female artists that can rival her in the current pop industry; Beyoncé and Lady Gaga. I mean, that's fucking pop royalty. Also, since that third album, Rihanna has released another four, with each one being an absolute mega-hit. She has had tons of successful singles and lots of critical acclaim too. She ain't too bad to look at either. Fair play to her, and her marketing team. They found a niché and they hit it. They hit it hard.
Rihanna is Not That Shit, so fuck you!
