Modern Philmily

I just had to get some sort of Phil Dunphy pun into the title. It's not a great one, not terrible. Let's move on.

Modern Family is one of the best sitcoms out there right now. It is one of those mockumentary type shows that has characters sometimes talk, and look, directly at the camera. I'm not usually that big a fan of this style, but Modern Family absolutely bosses it. It came out in 2009, and it was a break away from the heartless comedies that were on TV at the time. I'm talking about the likes of Two And A Half Men and The Big Bang Theory. The show is basically post-cynical, and I think that is a great thing.

The show would be nothing if it didn't have good, funny characters, and Modern Family has them in spades. It's one of the only shows that can make me laugh out loud when I'm on my own. Most of these moments come from Phil Dunphy, played to perfection by Ty Burrell, but all of the other characters have had their own moments too. I'm especially loving Luke and Lily in the latest season. These good characters are a testament to the great writers, and actors, that work for the show.

The thing that cemented this as one of my favourites, though, was one episode from the current season. It was episode thirteen. It was called "Fulgencio". It was classic Phil Dunphy. I could not stop laughing at the end of this episode. If you have seen The Godfather it's even better, but it's still funny if you haven't. Phil is a boss, and so is Luke. This ending actually does away with the mockumentary format, and I don't mind this at all. It is so fucking funny. Watch it now!

Modern Family is The Shit.
