Calvin Harris: 18 Months (Just Because I was Listening To It Today)
18 Months is the third album from Calvin Harris, and it's not the worst. For me, all of Calvin's albums have been decent, and I have been a fan of his music since the fantastic debut single "Acceptable in the 80's". When that song came out, I thought it was going to be a one-hit wonder, but, thankfully, that hasn't been the case, and Harris is still going strong.
In terms of sheer popularity, this latest album is an absolute monster. If you simply look at the track listing on the back, you can see that most of the songs have been absolute smash hits. This is fucking crazy, and a testament to Harris's innate ability to craft a solid pop song. The first single from this album featured vocals from Kelis and was entitled "Bounce" and it's a fucking great tune. Harris collaborated with a number of big names on this album including Rihanna, Tinie Tempah, and Ellie Goulding, and, as singles, these songs worked very well.
However, as an album, 18 Months is not greater than the sum of it's parts. Harris didn't come up with anything revolutionary, and it's obvious that most of the songs were written to get people out on the dancefloor. This has the effect of making the album a little bit bland and boring. Often it's the same old shit, but with a different singer. I really expected a lot more from Calvin Harris, and I hope he brings his A game in his next album.
